Bottled date juice of Magura
finds market abroad

A LOCAL NGO has been earning valuable foreign exchange by exporting bottled
date juice to the United States of America, United Kingdom and Canada since
2003.
The NGO, Advancement for Rootless People, has evolved a scientific
process under which bottled date juice remains fresh for three years. It has
got the approval of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute.
Samsul Bari, executive director of ARP and an inhabitant of village
Kazali in Magura, said that they collect raw date juice from the villagers
and bottle it after due processing.
The processed juice named 'Khejur Rasha' is relished by the customers of
these foreign countries, he added.
The price of a 300-ml bottle of Khejur Rasha has been fixed at two
dollars each while that of one litre bottle at five dollars each.
Ten thousand bottles of Khejur Rasha were produced last year. This year's
production target is 15,000.
The production was 600 bottles in the first year and 6,000 bottles in the
second year.
Twelve employees are now engaged in processing date juice in the firm.
As the production is mainly based during the winter the experts of the
NGO is trying to apply the scientific process in making bottled palm juice.
